ASGARD GENESIS - TEST DRIVE #1

the test drive meme.

let's do this.
  • Anyone can post to the test drive meme, including duplicates! Please put your character name and canon in the title of your comment.
  • All threads are considered open to everyone! Tag around and make some friends (or enemies)!
  • If you decide to apply to the game, you can use your TDM threads for your app samples! You only need to provide seven comments if you use TDM samples.
  • You can't be "late" to a TDM! This will be considered open until the next one goes live next month.
  • You can make up your own scenario, interact with one of the locations in the game, use the welcome process of your character selecting a god house, or use our optional prompt below!
  • You do not need to pick a god house to play on the TDM! You can have your character still in the process of discussing/deciding/despairing instead.
  • If you are accepted to the game, you can keep TDM threads as game canon as long as you fudge some of the details depending on your original thread. If you aren't sure exactly how to do this, you can always ask a mod.
  • Reserves open on May 25 at 12:01AM PST and close on May 31 at 11:59PM PST.
  • Applications open on June 1 at 12:01AM PST and close on June 7 at 11:59PM PST.
  • Please always feel free to contact the mods if you have any questions! Have fun, dear (future?) Wanderers. ♥

optional scenario.
As you enter Asgard proper, many of the natives have gathered into curious crowds to greet these mysterious children of the World Tree. Some of them carry baskets of flowers and nervously offer one to any Wanderers that come near. They are vibrant and colorful, picked from the wilds surrounding Asgard, and they might have an odd effect on your character if they sniff the flowers directly.

Purple flowers will make your character very giggly and easily amused by everything they see and hear.
Orange flowers will make your character feel very warm all over, like the sun is beating down on them directly.
Blue flowers will make your character somewhat short and impatient with anything that seems like even a minor inconvenience to them.

Effects of the flowers can wear off anywhere between a few minutes to an hour. And for those new to Asgard, this scenario aligns with some of the general curses we might have in the game!

[While Vergil's noticing how completely metal Nero's arm is, Nero is noticing how, for the first time, it actually feels to connect to something when you have a metallic limb. The shock of punching Vergil is absorbed somewhat by the post for his arm, but most of it still travels upwards, nerves fraying for several seconds while it crawls through his normal half into his back, finally settling in his spine and feeling like glass erupted there.

Suddenly, Nero has a brand new reason to not enjoy being here. Thanks, Asgard.

Jaw clenched (because like hell is he letting his father notice any of that), he practically erupts when Vergil starts talking.]
Don't you call me that- [But the thing is, he stops because Vergil keeps going, and what he says afterwords is pretty much close to impossible for him to fathom.

What, from the bottom of his heart, the absolute fuck.]

What the hell are you talking about. [Firmly, sharply. Nero isn't yelling at this point, but he's stiffened entirely, stepping back and looking at this man like he's suddenly speaking another language. This sort of reaction may seem a bit more familiar, in a way, to what Vergil is used to.] Last I checked, you two idiots were about to go kill each other up on top of the Qliphoth!

[This, however, may strike at the true problem- Nero has not yet been as far as Vergil has. He hasn't called Dante "dead weight," he hasn't beaten the shit out of his father (yet), he hasn't even gotten to the point of stopping the two of them from dealing a fatal blow. Which means, as of now, that Nero hasn't woken any of his true power- only realizing what he has to do in order to stop the twins from doing something they'll regret. He has no idea that this will spark his own true power, no idea that he'll gain his arm back and also Devil Trigger in the same instant to allow him to get to Dante and Vergil in time.

None of that has happened yet, but it will. Vergil simply happens to be from the end result of all that, and getting Nero to even really understand half of what he's being told is... a lot of work. This is getting more and more troublesome by the minute.]

[ Vergil's eyes narrow, and just for a moment, his focus diverts from the cut in his mouth. There's a strange voice in the back of his mind, one he doesn't recognize, as he regards Nero: is this truly the same boy from Red Grave, or a deception? it asks, and while he hates acknowledging that moment of weakness, perhaps he might be forgiven in the interest of protecting himself from further manipulations.

His hand returns to the hilt of his sword — not to threaten, but just in case. ]

That business was concluded. At your hands, Nero. [ He's not sure what answer he wants as he asks: ] Do you not recall?

[ Perhaps this is more strange magic at work. Perhaps this is indeed a trick conjured up by something purporting to be a "god". There is no way to purge the image of his mother strolling around with Dante in unfortunately revealing clothes, seen by Urizen and passed on; of all the things to have happened in his life, that perhaps stings more than others.

So perhaps it isn't so far-fetched to suspect the same of Nero. And Vergil isn't certain as to why the idea rankles as much as it does.

Still. Despite the insistence of that quiet voice, he finds he doesn't want it to be true. A test, then, and Vergil raises his chin, levels a look at the boy. ]

Where is my book, Nero? I gave it to you shortly before leaving.

[For a long moment, Nero listens, confusing apparent in his eyes and in his face. He doesn't interject, doesn't loudly throw an insult or argue. He just listens, both completely lost at the differences they're both talking about. It's clear they're talking about the same thing, but something isn't matching up, and Nero tilts his head, pressing his lips into a firm line.]

I'm was going to stop you two-- [That business was concluded. At your hands, Nero. He'd decided that they wouldn't kill each other, and made that his goal. It was what he was going to do before he suddenly arrived here. But Vergil is speaking like it's already done, as if he's already gone and...

The gears start clicking.]
Wait a goddamn minute-!

[He pauses, splaying his metallic hand out so Vergil can pay attention. He doesn't miss the fact that his father's hand is on the hilt of Yamato.] That's already happened for you, right? I stopped you two from fighting.

[A beat, and he realizes he has to vocally say this, even if it sounds like the stupidest fucking thing.] It hasn't happened for me. Not yet. [He exhales, careful, steady. Nero suddenly wishes he had his powers here, because this now feels a lot more dangerous compared to when he was just angrily talking with Vergil.] You mean the book V had, right? I don't have it. You haven't given it to me yet.

[This just keeps getting worse and worse, and a part of him already feels that his answer won't be the one Vergil wants to hear at all.]

[ Two things happen at once.

As soon as Nero's hand is extended, his grip tightens on the sword, the blade withdrawn a couple of inches. Still, he isn't without control of himself — Nero had said to wait, and so he waits, listening intently and eyes narrowing the more he speaks.

It hasn't happened for me. Not yet. ]

You're implying that this... mix up is the result of a manipulation of time.

[ A statement, not a question, even as his mind races. He has known creatures, demons, with some grip over time. He'd allowed Arkham to summon a Geryon to impede Dante's journey through the Temen-ni-gru. He'd run into another in Red Grave feeding off of the impostor, before killing it and freeing her from its grasp. It isn't so far outside of the realm of possibility.

And yet.

Even then, even with all of his research, all the knowledge he's obtained over the years, he has never known a power like this. To be able to pluck one creature from a particular point in time, and another from a separate point— Such a thing would be nigh impossible.

Creating a duplicate of a known person to lure him into a false sense of security, however... The proof exists that such things are possible. ]

That would take a being of unimaginable power, to achieve such a thing. I have yet to find proof of any such existence.

[ It's all the warning Nero gets before Vergil swings out with Yamato, dancing back and away. Perhaps it's the lingering hesitance that suspects the boy may be right, or perhaps the manipulation is working — he refuses to consider the truth even as he twists his wrist, aiming to strike Nero's hand away with the flat of his blade. It doesn't escape him that he doesn't get nearly as far as he'd intended, but still. It's far enough.

The blade is held at arm's length, pointing at the center of Nero's chest. It shouldn't need to be said, but perhaps he'd been in Dante's company too long: ]

I don't believe you.

[The second Yamato is unsheathed, every nerve in Nero's body screams like a siren, a warning that crosses his face far too late before the strike. Even as Vergil hits with the flat of the blade, it reverberates through the Devil Breaker and stills the air around the both of them, Nero forgetting to breathe as the seconds tick away.

Fuck.

Of course he wouldn't believe it. Hell, if Nero were in his place he'd have a hard time, too. But he wouldn't amount to... well. This. And he has no idea how to prove what he's saying is true, only by word and by his arm, which Vergil seems to have disregarded at this moment.]

Yeah, well. It's the truth, even if you don't like it.

[He doesn't want to fight Vergil. Usually he wouldn't give a shit, because fighting is in his blood, and facing the man who apparently is his own father doesn't sound too bad, if it means he gets to beat some sense into him. Even the location doesn't really fucking matter. But Asgard isn't normal- he's feeling things that he shouldn't in his arm, Vergil is actually bleeding and not healing, and his arm doesn't work right. Much as he wants to kick his father's ass, he's also really not wanting to do this bullshit right now.

But it's also Vergil. Nero doubts he's going to just let him walk out of this. Yamato is out and pointed very clearly at his chest; that's a threat, and it's a threat from a son of Sparda.

Nero's hand gently goes to the hilt of Red Queen, but he doesn't pull her from his back. He doesn't want to do this.]

All I've got is my word. [A beat, and every muscle in his body tenses, eyes looking at Vergil very clearly.] Guess that's all you're gonna get.

[ He's fought Nero before, remembers it well. It hasn't been that long since he and Dante had decided to take care of the Qliphoth — besides, who could truly forget their son shouting obscenities at them? The memory brings just the slightest quirk to Vergil's lips, a very small grin. While it's not within his own temperament to do such things.. he would be hard pressed to deny the family resemblance.

Which makes it all the harder when he considers his options. The dilemma: does he believe in Nero, that their timeline has somehow been meddled with? Or does he call him for the liar Vergil believes him to be, and put an end to this charade?

He finds himself unsure. And he hates it. ]

Your word. Hm. [ His eyes track Nero's hand, watching him touch his own blade. Curious that he wouldn't defend himself with it, but then again they've only just begun. ] One does have to wonder if that is in fact enough.

[ He remembers fighting Nero, remembers the wings that appeared over his shoulders and their sheer strength. He certainly hadn't had them or his arm when he'd extended his invitation to Dante; safe to assume, then, that their appearance influenced, or at least was accompanied by his arm. It would stand to reason that if Nero, conspicuously missing his arm and wings, is unable to summon them now, it might support this theory.

Of all the options, it seems the fastest way to settle this. Vergil takes a slow, deep breath. searching deep inside himself — and freezes when there is no response. No blue spark snapping in his blood, no sign of his demon powers. ]

Why? What is this place?

[ The words are muttered through grit teeth; he knows Nero will likely have no answers for him, but the questions bear speaking aloud anyway. His grip tightens on the hilt of the Yamato as he narrows his eyes. ]

Tell me, Nero. Do you truly not feel it? The power in your blood?

[A million thoughts race through his head as the seconds pass, and he wonders, perhaps, if this is just some awful nightmare he's having a hard time waking from. But no, Nico would be kicking his ass out of bed and yelling at him if that were the case, and the blows he's dealt and the words being said feel far too real for it to be anything but. This is fucked, all of it is seriously fucked.

One does have to wonder if that is in fact enough.

Okay no, that does it. Red Queen is pulled from his back and rested on his shoulder, Nero gritting his teeth and waiting for the other shoe to drop. He may just end up tossing all the precautions to the side, the way this is going- even without his arm working properly, he can still fight.]

Hell if I know, beyond that it sucks.

[Muttered or not, he can still hear his father easily enough. And he can't help but exhale as Vergil continues, the question of his own powers like an echo that sears through his mind.

There's no connection, here. No touch or even the hint of what he used to have with Yamato. Nero's mouth presses into a thin line.]

No.

[Neither the power in his blood comes to him, or whatever else Vergil may be expecting as an example. He has nothing here, just his sword and his gun.

He's hoping that's going to be enough.]

[ Ah.

It comes as a sort of relief to see Nero finally draw his weapon. This, he knows, is familiar with; this comes far more naturally to him than anything else in this world. Does Vergil have any idea how to approach being Nero's father? Not in the slightest. Does he know what he would have done, trapped with Dante in the Underworld for the foreseeable future? No. But on both accounts they had fought, and that had been familiar and welcome.

It feels fitting, then, to fight his blood upon arriving here.

It is fitting. It also gives him something to focus on, something to pull his mind away from the fact that he feels absolutely no connection to the heritage he'd fought and killed and died for. Vergil smiles, an almost bitter thing. ]

On that, we can agree. This does suck.

[ Strange words, that sound as though they would be more fitting coming from Dante's mouth than his own. He can't deny their truth, however.

Vergil raises the Yamato, settles into a ready stance as he keeps his eyes on Nero.

Even if he isn't real, if this is all just some hallucination, perhaps he can afford the boy a bit of courtesy. ]

If what you're theorizing is true, we'll settle the matter right now. Show me the strength of your convictions, Nero.
