ASGARD GENESIS - TEST DRIVE #1

the test drive meme.

let's do this.
  • Anyone can post to the test drive meme, including duplicates! Please put your character name and canon in the title of your comment.
  • All threads are considered open to everyone! Tag around and make some friends (or enemies)!
  • If you decide to apply to the game, you can use your TDM threads for your app samples! You only need to provide seven comments if you use TDM samples.
  • You can't be "late" to a TDM! This will be considered open until the next one goes live next month.
  • You can make up your own scenario, interact with one of the locations in the game, use the welcome process of your character selecting a god house, or use our optional prompt below!
  • You do not need to pick a god house to play on the TDM! You can have your character still in the process of discussing/deciding/despairing instead.
  • If you are accepted to the game, you can keep TDM threads as game canon as long as you fudge some of the details depending on your original thread. If you aren't sure exactly how to do this, you can always ask a mod.
  • Reserves open on May 25 at 12:01AM PST and close on May 31 at 11:59PM PST.
  • Applications open on June 1 at 12:01AM PST and close on June 7 at 11:59PM PST.
  • Please always feel free to contact the mods if you have any questions! Have fun, dear (future?) Wanderers. ♥

optional scenario.
As you enter Asgard proper, many of the natives have gathered into curious crowds to greet these mysterious children of the World Tree. Some of them carry baskets of flowers and nervously offer one to any Wanderers that come near. They are vibrant and colorful, picked from the wilds surrounding Asgard, and they might have an odd effect on your character if they sniff the flowers directly.

Purple flowers will make your character very giggly and easily amused by everything they see and hear.
Orange flowers will make your character feel very warm all over, like the sun is beating down on them directly.
Blue flowers will make your character somewhat short and impatient with anything that seems like even a minor inconvenience to them.

Effects of the flowers can wear off anywhere between a few minutes to an hour. And for those new to Asgard, this scenario aligns with some of the general curses we might have in the game!

“You sure they started here?”

He is completely certain that four is the correct number of legs for any horse. What do eight hoofbeats sound like in battle, or at a full trot? Maybe not as bad as he thinks they might. Maybe just like two horses running at the same time. Maybe not like a nightmare steed come up from some hell.

It is better to see horses with eight legs that look whole and healthy than to see dead four-legged horses carrying riders as the flesh falls from them, he realizes. It pushes away a bit of his unease.

“These horses... what do they eat?”

"Yes." Without any hesitation or room for doubt; of the many things Honir does not know, this, he is certain about. He reaches up to scratch behind the horse's ear and it seems to lean into his touch, sniffing towards his arm in search of snacks or further affection. They are as sweet as any other horse, friend Snow, although that also means they can be just as aggressive when threatened.

More feet for stomping? Definitely a valid concern.

"They like grass and apples and sometimes they'll nibble on your fingers if you've got something sweet." Normal horse stuff. "Do you want to try feeding them? I'm sure they'll be happy to make some new friends!"

“That sounds like any other horse,” he admits. Which can mean fair-tempered or foul, but he is usually as gentle with horses as he can be. Some have died under him, but not because of any cruelty on his part, only because they’d taken him on a hard and desperate ride, or because they were killed in battle.

“Do you have a carrot?” Carrots seem less likely to get his fingers nipped than his apple does. But if Honir thinks horses have eight legs and seems somehow uneasy about dogs, carrots might be too much to ask for.

It's not too much to ask at all; Honir thinks about it for only a second before summoning a carrot to his hand - which the horse immediately zones in on and snatches from him before he can offer it to Jon. It makes the god laugh with immense fondness.

"Okay, let's try that again." He takes a step away from the stable, earning a huff of discontent from the animal, before summoning another handful of carrots out of thin air and offering the lot to Jon. "Have you trained one before? We're still teaching some of them to be nicer, but this one's a sweetheart when he isn't stealing food."

The carrot trick makes him look momentarily dismayed, then interested. He takes the second summoning.

"Trained one, no. I wasn't a stableboy back home." He doesn't mean to sound like a highborn, but that's always been the way of it: low birth and a highborn's upbringing because of who his father was. "But I'm a good rider, and I know how to care for a horse. I've always had them."

Then he turns his attention to the horse and offers it the carrot gently. "There, sweet lad."

In a world completely lacking in social structure, his words make perfect sense to Honir; he knows how to ride, but not how to train, and that's still quite magnificent when the humans of this world are still brand new to both.

"Look at that," Honir says fondly, almost proud for one who is not in any way a father. That's a different Norse myth. He grins bright and happy at Jon, "Well? How would you like to go for a ride then, eight legs and all?"
