James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes | MCU
Die in one war, and you end up fighting in another. Whoopee. At the very least, as far as he can tell Steve isn't around, which means he isn't dead yet. It's an incredibly small comfort, considering that Bucky being here means he can't watch Steve's back, and yeah, okay, he's a big guy now who can take care of himself, and the Howling Commandos are still alive, apparently, but old habits die hard.
He steps out of the castle and--
It's snowing. Oh, irony, he's not sure whether to laugh in your face or hate you. It's snowing.
Irony aside, though, Bucky can still appreciate snow, and he can most definitely appreciate the fact that this place looks a lot less like he's come to expect out of an actual war and a lot more like a snowball fight of epic proportions. Hell, he might actually join in, if not for the fact that he'd love to figure out what to do first--
--and splat goes the snowball. Bucky wipes it off his face, but it is on now, and he bends down to pack one together and throw it towards whoever's thrown the first one at him.
Maybe it's you. Or maybe you're just some poor guy who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whatever you are, there is a snowball coming from Bucky's direction, headed straight towards you.
Duck.]
oh my god OH MY GOD ooc tho
no subject
omg i am too excited for this tho.
really, snowball fighting with natasha wasn't fair. she had reflexes honed from battle and spying. and deadly accuracy. in some eyes, maybe that made this all the more fun. but once she caught who actually threw the snowball, the retaliatory ball in her hand dropped from limp fingers. ]
James.
[ it had to be. there was no one else who's face was burned into her memory in quite the same way. her muscles taut, she stared at him, ankle deep in snow - ready to flee if need be, and considering it anyway. ]
I AM TOO oh my god
She's staring at him like she knows him from somewhere, and--well, that's a little new, because he's pretty sure he'd remember meeting her. Maybe she saw the films, though he personally doubts that notion.]
You know, that's not the first time a pretty dame's called me by name before I asked hers.
dkla;nveioas IT HURTS tho
[ it's not a question. there wasn't any hint of recognition on his face, though he was still the same old james with that smile. and .. he looked different. his arm wasn't metal, his eyes were more .. inviting. not shadowed, like they had been when she'd met him.
she approached warily. ]
My name is .. [ which name? the one he called her or the one she gave, normally. if he didn't recognize her, her real name wouldn't help. maybe it'd jog his memory?
in the end, she decides: ] Natasha.
the movie hasn't even come out yet imagine how much more painful that would be
[Either from the films, or Natasha's from the SSR, which is a less far-fetched notion than the former, really.]
it's going to be lots of sobbing and pain
[ why not let his arrogance do the rest? that'll keep the attention off her. ] Did you just arrive?
sobbing, pain and setting yourself on fire: marvel cinematic universe, folks
Yeah, woke up here a few hours ago. [One minute he's falling to his death, the ice waiting for him just below, and the next he wakes up in a room and he's being greeted by a faceless maid. Not many things can throw Bucky off-guard, these days, but that was one of them.] Figured I'd go check out the city first after getting out, before somebody threw a snowball at me.
PRETTY MUCH
You're taking it well. No hysterics? No demanding to know what is going on? [ still, she definitely didn't throw a snowball at you. then again, most people around them were fighting, so why not? ] It gives one hope.

[Besides, he's still pretty sure he's dead. That's usually what happens when one falls off a moving train at a great height.]
wow hello my name is sel and i am a failure at life
[ that unflappable calm. she can envy it, a little bit. at least when she'd arrived here, she'd thought this was yet another plot by Loki to take over the world. ] What would you like to know?
no worries tbh i am also a failure at life
[He's had time and experience to build up that calm. He's kind of had to.]
Let's start with whatever this thing's leaving out. [And he brings up Loki's guide on the bracelet-thing.] And I've got a feeling there's plenty.
but i love you tho
You'd be right about that. Most notably, you can't go home. You're stuck in this war now, even if you don't care what happens to your world.
[ or if you think you're dead. ]
yes ilu too
[To say he's not unsettled by that would be lying, because to tell the truth, he kind of is. War isn't supposed to follow you into the afterlife, that much he's learned.
But the thing is--he does care. He might be dead, and he might not be able to go home, but that doesn't mean he's not going to fight for it. And if that means fighting a war in the afterlife, well, fine. Besides, as far as he knows, his world still has Steve in it.]
Yeah, well, that's not too much of a shock. Not going home, anyway. The part where we've got new powers thanks to gods kind of is. [Because--seriously, really? Kind of stretching it here.]
no subject
[ it feels too familiar; she answers him automatically as she might have back home. she has to stop herself from talking about the other war, the one where she'd been decidedly on the wrong side before the motherland switched sides. he didn't seem to recognize her; best not to tell him a damn thing about her past. ]
No? Most people here want to go home; that's their goal. [ hey, you get used to it. ]
no subject
[His gaze slides to her for a moment, just a little suspicious of the automatic answer, but then goes back to the guide.]
What about you? You looking to get home too?
no subject
[ the question is innocent enough and if she's more than a little interested in the answer, she doesn't show it. answering what he'd asked her though is complicated. ]
.. Eventually. I'm not so certain I'd want to leave the people here behind. But this wasn't exactly the vacation I imagined.
no subject
[More to the point, the last thing he remembers is the ice coming up to meet him.]
It's a war, not a vacation, but I can't blame you. It sure doesn't look like one right now. [What with the snowball fights happening all around them.]
no subject
Don't let your guard down. Things can change here in an instant, and often do. It may not look like a war now, but who knows what things will look like in an hour?
[ she watches one of the fights around them. ]
These people, they aren't soldiers. They need a break, when they can catch one.
