OKAY THE USUAL INTRODUCTION WHICH YOU ALREADY KNOW: With repetition you get better, and interacting with someone you get to see them individually. Eventually. At least that’s how it works for Kaworu and that’s how he ends up seeing someone individually. It’s extremely difficult for him to see someone like that, but when it happens, he grows so fond of that person.

Kaworu’s love doesn’t have a proper definition, it doesn’t have limits. As matter of fact, Kaworu’s love is unconditional and very (literally) alien because he IS an alien. It’s not romantic, friendship, family, sympathy, pity, enjoyment, care, fun… it’s none of those because those would NEVER be enough to describe the sort of love Kaworu has for someone he sees individually. Kaworu’s love has no limits to define it. He isn’t “in love”, he just loves. The best way to describe this love is to call it “Love”. It’s its own definition.

It’s actually hard to tell how he started seeing Equius like that, but it was probably due to Equius STRONG reaction to Kaworu’s words and affection. He never met anyone who reacted so contradictorily like that, who seemed to reject it so much but at the same time wanted it so much. Kaworu, of course, is more than happy to give love, even if the two are so incompatible.

Equius sees it as romantic love and Kaworu doesn’t even know what romantic love is. While Equius explained kaworu’s words and actions could be seen as a romantic gesture, Kaworu’s words and actions are simply to show Equius he is loved and cared for; it doesn’t have any romantic and sexual connotation because Kaworu is incapable of that. It’s just showing love, showing care.

Of course when Equius started to show possible romantic interest in Kaworu things got complicated. Because Kaworu doesn’t want and will not refuse Equius’ feelings, he cannot reciprocate the same. His love for Equius and whatever feelings Equius has for Kaworu are simply not the same – that’s why he will not kiss the troll, even though he is quite alright with kissing. He won’t do it simply because it will not have the meaning Equius will want/hopes to have/thinks it has.

However, Kaworu doesn’t outright reject the idea. Equius wishes to teach Kaworu romantic love and wants to find out what his feelings for Kaworu are, so the angel won’t refuse the troll that. Because he says he doesn’t know romantic love, but he can’t really say he will never feel it. That’s why they go on dates, right? And kaworu does love their dates c:
