Jaqen H'ghar » ASOIAF
They hadn't been joking, those faceless ladies.
He comes to terms with it quickly, assuming that, sooner or later, there would be an opportunity to solve this. Until then? Well. He takes a long look at his own reflection in a window and decides that he could have been stuck with worse. Inconvenient, but bearable. His armor is intact, too... All in all, things could be worse.
Just then, the ground begins to shake. Called it. ]
Can't a man be granted a little peace?
no subject
[ Uttered by a most aristocratic little voice from somewhere behind him.
Maria's from England, she's not exactly used to earthquakes. ]
no subject
[ Oh no. Little girl. Little girl with an undertone in her voice that he doesn't like at all. Not for personal reasons, but he just murdered rather a lot of men over a clever girl, and this one has this air of trouble about her, too.
Just as if to defy his words, something cracks unpleasantly behind them. ]
A man stands corrected. A little harm.
no subject
He is rather right, however, in assuming that there is a somewhat similar personality there. In some areas at least. The troublesome ones. ]
The earth is shaking? Why?
[ Is the city going to come down around them? Are they under attack?
Is she going to have to bust out that super strength of hers? ]
no subject
It does as it is wont to do.
[ Science with Jaqen. There's a reason he won't sign up as a teacher. ]
A man does not know all of its mysteries.
[ Again, that awful creaking noise. ]
Though he understands that it wills us to move.
[ He gives his reflection on last glance, then begins to do as he just suggested: a couple steps away from that building. ]
no subject
You speak very oddly.
[ Though she can certainly see his point about the building, and so she follows him when he steps away from it.
Congratulations Jaqen, you just became her escort. ]
no subject
So does a girl.
[ Oh, damn straight he just imitated her accent. ]
no subject
I do not.
[ That is so not what she sounds like, Jaqen, no way. Huff! ]
no subject
She does.
[ But he also knows better than to tease her further. It wouldn't look good. ]
Does a man's speech bother her?
no subject
[ He isn't even really the oddest person she's ever met. Marmaduke Scarlett is a rather hard act to follow in that department. ]
I was just saying.
no subject
Where is she from, this peculiar girl?
no subject
[ Will that even mean anything to him? Who knows in this strange place. ]
Where are you from?
no subject
A man comes from the Free City of Lorath, situated in the land of Essos.

the earthquakes are bothersome, but she'd rather that than any number of less pleasant circumstances - being in her welcome house while jaime lannister is around being number one - so she braves the shakes and tries to get through some errands. the more she works the sooner she can get out of there, anyhow. she's caught up enough in carefully choosing her steps, darting around fallen obstacles and generally keeping out of harms reach that she almost misses him entirely, because she's long given up hope of seeing a familiar face around here that she doesn't want dead.
arya hears his voice though, and she freezes for a moment. she stops, stares, and then marches up to him without any further hesitation. in these troubled times, she still isn't quite sure if she wants to hug him or hit him. in the end it's neither though, and she just stops a few feet away before folding her arms over her chest. ]
You have your face back.
[ hi friend nice to see you again ]
no subject
it has been a small pain. she may be trouble, but she was also bright. clever. quick. not as merciful as one would suspect. she has what it would take -- but he never quite got to the offer.
then again, if she recalls him changing his face, and doesn't question his 'disappearance'... perhaps times don't quite align. perhaps she had asked the right question and he'd answered it. ]
A city insisted, and now Jaqen H'ghar will have to live on. Are you pleased?
[ he smiles. still, this is important. for all he knows, she could know about the faceless men, and that isn't the kind of thing he'd like to be known for all over the city. yet. ]
no subject
at any rate, she's never been in the business of sharing very much, so it will very much remains unsaid. ]
No. [ yes, but she's as sullen and stubborn as ever, and caring about people hasn't gotten her very far up until now. ] Maybe. You left.
[ it's more honest an admission than she's expecting, and though the surprise disappears from her features quickly they're still most definitely there - even if only for an instant.
with a small shrug of her shoulders, she pointedly turns her gaze away. ]
You shouldn't have gone.
[ and that is about as close to an 'i missed you' as anyone will ever get from arya stark. ]
no subject
but such men need names that do not change and faces that always stay the same. he is No One, and he must serve, like they all must, until he dies, like they all do. even if his mission is temporarily delayed, and most likely needs to be started from scratch once he returns... that's beside the point. he is no ordinary man.
still, he knows himself. there is something he would have done before leaving her, just because, perhaps, not all of the times when he called himself a friend were lies.
of course, he may well be wrong nonetheless. this place plays a strange game. ]
A man would not have left without an offer. A gift, mayhaps.
[ if anything, she might tell him why he did not. if he did, in fact, not. ]
